Insulated Pex-Al-Pex Pipe

Technical Description

Insulated PEX-AL-PEX Pipe – Product Description

Insulated PEX-AL-PEX pipe is a multilayer composite pipe wrapped in a protective foam insulation, designed for superior thermal efficiency and durability in applications like hydronic heating and plumbing systems. The insulation layer minimizes heat loss in hot water systems and prevents condensation in cold water applications.

Composition and Structure

The pipe itself is a five-layer composite, and when insulated, it includes an additional outer insulation layer.

  • Inner PEX Layer: A cross-linked polyethylene layer that is in direct contact with the fluid. It is corrosion-resistant, provides flexibility, and is safe for potable water.
  • Adhesive Layers: Specialized bonding agents that create a strong, durable connection between the PEX and aluminum layers.
  • Aluminum Core: A welded aluminum tube that acts as a 100% oxygen barrier, preventing oxygen from permeating the pipe and causing corrosion in metal components (like boilers and pumps). It also provides structural rigidity, reduces thermal expansion/contraction (much less than standard PEX), and allows the pipe to hold its shape after bending.
  • Outer PEX Layer: Another layer of cross-linked polyethylene that protects the aluminum core from external damage, abrasion, and corrosion.
  • Insulation Layer: An extruded, closed-cell polyethylene foam that is fire-resistant and often covered by a UV-stabilized outer foil for protection in underground or outdoor installations.

Key Benefits

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: The insulation layer significantly reduces heat loss in hot water systems, leading to lower energy consumption and reduced utility bills.
  • Corrosion and Scale Resistance: The PEX layers and aluminum core prevent rust, scale buildup, and chemical degradation.
  • Durability and Long Lifespan: The multilayer construction offers enhanced strength and pressure resistance, with a design life span of over 50 years.
  • Ease of Installation: The pipe is lightweight and flexible, allowing for longer, joint-free runs which reduces the number of potential leak points and simplifies installation. It also holds its shape when bent, making layout precise.
  • Low Thermal Expansion: The aluminum layer minimizes the linear thermal expansion/contraction common in all-plastic pipes, preventing pipe movement and noise (water hammer).
  • Condensation Prevention: In cold water applications, the insulation helps prevent condensation from forming on the pipe's exterior.
